VVilhelm presents The VV Experience, Chloe Bodur, Queen Colobus

Jun 2019

Colchester’s UK Jazz // Soul // Experimental live music night returns to Three Wise Monkeys Colchester hosted by VVilhelm, bringing back The VV Experience and two of VVilhelm’s associated acts from London and Brighton.

The VV Experience
“From rolling grooves to psychedelic atmospheres, The VV Experience crosses the boundaries of Jazz, Hip-Hop, and Electronic music with it’s own fluidity and energy. Formed as VVilhelm’s brainchild, the 5-piece plays a mix of originals and covers, to bring a palette of vibes from contemporary music and a kaleidoscope of sonic textures to a live act. With each member bringing their own character and ideas from their own projects (including Colchester’s Monster Florence, Sam Eagle, Fishclaw, and Norfolk’s Guranfoe), the band is sure to bring something for everybody listening and moving.”

Chloe Bodur
Born in London, 21-year-old Chloe Bodur cites influences ranging from Astrud Gilberto, Billie Holiday, D’angelo and Frank Sinatra to BadBadNotGood, Kendrick Lamar, Tyler The Creator and The Internet; with melodic elements from traditional soul and samba, contrasting the rhythmic colouring of American hiphop and the current London jazz scene. Her layered ‘psychedelic-soul’ soundscapes paired with her unapologetic lyricism and erratic yet sultry vocals create a unique sound that has created a buzz around the budding artist, with The Huffington Post (USA) hailing Chloe as ‘a beacon of empowerment for young women’. After releasing debut single ‘Glory’ in November 2017, Bodur sold out her own headline shows in London and Brighton, supported Puma Blue on his UK tour and featured on JD. Reids mixtape ‘Tree’ alongside Fatima, Henry Wu and slowthai, all during her first year of releasing music. Bodur here has showcased her relentless work ethic which coupled with ‘soul beyond her years’ makes her an independent artist that refuses to go unnoticed.

Queen Colobus
Queen Colobus is a four-piece jazz fusion band led by alto saxophonist and singer, Beth Hopkins. Having played in different bands in Southampton, they recently formed a musical alliance within the London jazz scene centring around Tomorrow’s Warriors. They found that they liked making sounds at each other, with or without instruments. Their music is loosely connected to jazz but also draws inspiration from indie, hip-hop, afrobeat and neo-soul. Beth’s compositions are fuelled by frustration at subjects generally talked about in music, such as the diet industry, having no voice and mental health issues. Their name comes from a species of Old World monkey, which reflects their wise and playful nature.
